In need of color

"Flamingo Rose"  Acrylic on watercolor paper, 16 x 12 inches

Cold and snowy outside today, and needed something to get me going.  Decided hot pink was the answer.  Used some airbrush acrylics to do this one.  Do not like air brushing, tried it for a while and had paint left from those days.  The airbrush is a fluid acrylic very fine grain pigments interesting to use with large watercolor brushes.
   Hope you like this one.
Happy snow day

Three in one day

Acrylic and inks
Today is day 5 of the 30 paintings in 30 days, instead of one I did 3 paintings.  What started as a warm up exercise, ended up with 3 little painting I really like.   I like to sometimes set up a full sheet of watercolor paper, section it off and pick a subject to paint multiple times.  Today I set up a blue vase with some silk tulips and started painting, alternating between inks and acrylic paint.
    Here is the group together...

After I separate and matte these I will be adding them to my Daily Paint Work site.

Day 2, worked with a acrylic paint to make a loose mass of flowers and vase.  Then after letting the acrylic paint dry finished with a liner brush and acrylic inks.  Two done and only 28 more to go.  Should be a fun month:)

Always Something to Paint

Acrylic on canvas 6 x 6 inches  Geranium 1

Acrylic on canvas 6 x 6 inch Geranium 2
                                  Click to Bid

The subject for these 2 paintings were a some Geraniums I pick outside a Holiday Inn I was staying at for a short trip I took this Fall.

I was restless and  really wanted to paint something, so I took a short walk and noticed the flowers still in bloom outside the hotel entrance.  So, I helped myself to a couple of blooms and went back to my room, grabbed on of those cheap plastic cups and set the flowers up on a window sill and started painting.  The first painting was done in the room that evening.  The second painting I used the original painting as a starting point reference.
The idea is if you love painting you can always find something of interest to work from.

Comfort Zone

Day 19 and 20 ....
"Ruby Rose"  Oil on stretched canvas 10x8 inches

Decided to visit my little comfort zone; oil and florals, for this paintings for the challenge.
Sometimes that comfort zone is a good place to go, to let what you are learning or struggling with sink in.

"Peaceful Energy"  Oil 10 x 8 inches

Only a week and a half to go!

Early change

Poppies in a Daisy Vase, Oil on canvas panel, 10 x 8 inches
Starting out an oil painting with an underpainting is a great way to see how well the composition will work.

The first idea was to include a seashell with the flowers.  But after looking at the lay-out, the shell added nothing to the composition. The shell was too centered and actually distracted from the flowers.  At this point the changes were easy to make, to complete the painting.
Just bought I would share the idea, do not be afraid to change your plans, and earlier in a painting is much better than later.

"A Stand of Blue"  Oil, unframed, 14 x 11 inches

Today starts the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge by Leslie Saeta.  I have been doing these challenges from the very first one, even have a separate page on this blog with post from the challenges.  So I decided to keep going and do this one.
The game plan for this month is simple, play, paint, and play some more.  Each day I will do a painting, it may be a finished work, or simply and idea that may get worked up into another painting. I plan to share them all, either as a main part of my blog or as a general posting on the 30 paintings in 30 days tab.
Today is a finished work in oil on 300 lb arches watercolor paper that was pre gessoed.  This started out as a test of 2 new tubes of paint, an umber and a new brand of cobalt blue, but quickly progressed to a finished work with additional colors of yellow and orange.  What I like about this one is the vase has a sassy look to it.  Looks like a lady with her hand on her hip ready to tell you what you don't know:)

Day 16 of 30 paintings in 30 days

Some flowers from my imagination today....

"Red on Violet"  8 x 8 inches, Acrylic on gallery wrap canvas.AVAILABLE AT DPWS
Wanted to play with some color and lines today.  Love painting on Gallery wrap canvas because you can carry the painting on to the sides, lets you have more than just a straight on view of the art,  And you do not have to frame it :)
Past the half way mark in the 30 in 30 challenge, feels good.

Day 6

Acrylic on watercolor paper, matted to 14 x 11 inches"A Star is Bottled"
The sunflowers in my yard are starting to hang heavy.  Glad I started the challenge with the first week  using sunflowers as my theme, pretty soon they will be mainly seeds.  Of the 6 painted so far think this one is my favorite.

Day 5 of 30 paintings in 30 days

Definitely  a Sunflower week .....
Acrylic on watercolor paper, Matted to 14 x 11 inchesAvailable at DPWs
After spending the summer painting outside with oils, I am really enjoying revisiting acrylic painting again.   I am painting on an Arches 140 lb watercolor block.  The block gives it an extra strong surface to work on, and keeps the paper flat.  Watercolor paper is not just for watercolors:)

Day 3

"Sun Burst"  Acrylic on watercolor paper,  DPWs Auction
Day 3 of the the 30 paintings in 30 days Sept. challenge.  Experimenting a bit with the leaf colors.  I noticed in the sun the leaves seem to have a light blueish cast, so wanted to add that to this still-life.

First day of 30 in 30

"At the Edges", Encaustic on canvas panel, 8 x 8 inches
AVAILABLE AT DPWS
This is painted with a new brand of paint called Ceracolors, that are water-soluble beeswax-based paint.
I refer to them as encaustic, because they are wax and pigment, but differ in that, they do not need to be melted to paint with.
Hope you enjoy this little view of my garden.  These flowers will be my focus for the first week of Thirty Paintings in Thirty Days.

Plein air in the back yard

10 x 8 inch acrylic on canvas

Want to get outside and paint, but do not want to spend gas and time getting there?   Just take a walk around your yard there is bound to be something interesting.
I let daisies grow around my veggie garden,  and they ended up being subject material for the day.
After painting one, it just was not enough decided to paint two more.

10 x 8 inches acrylic on canvas
Great way to spend the day,  and all the paintings sold, two to Texas and one to Arizona, guess I am not the only one that likes daisies :)

More than three

16 x 12 inches, ink on watercolor paper
                                                        Available at DPWs

Winter is over, and time to celebrate Spring.  After working on yard work for several days, decided to treat myself to some flowers.  It will be a while before there are any flowers blooming outside,  so having some in the house feels wonderful.  Of course with fresh flowers, they must be painted.
14 x 11 acrylic on canvas sheet

I pick a few flowers from the bouquet, set them on the table with just the right light and started painting.
14 x 11 acrylic on canvas sheet

After three paintings set the blooms aside, back in my kitchen.  Studied the paintings, although I liked them, they just say what I wanted the paintings to say.
 14 x 11 acrylic on canvas sheet

Today while walking through the kitchen, I noticed how well the light and shadows looked on the bouquet, so got my watercolor pad out, a couple brushes, and my inks.  Standing in the middle of the kitchen, I painted them just as they looked, (minus the dishes in the sink), and was finally happy with the painting.

Sometimes it takes more than 3 times to get some right.

Another View

Getting into the swing of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.  Today I did another view of my current favorite vase.  Love the primary colors on the vase and that any way you turn it the design is different.
Half way through the challenge, and happier with the paintings the last few days.  Not all my daily paintings are getting posted, only the ones I like the best.  Guess I have a more causal
approach this time compared to the last two challenges.

A little Vintage

I have to share a secret;  I love shopping second hand shops.  Today's painting is of a great little vintage find.  There is a shop in Durand Michigan called ReThinkinit a friend and artist owns, that I am just addicted to.  Going into a shop that has art, handmade stuff, recycled art, and vintage items, there is no way to leave with out a little something.  The vase in this painting is one of those finds.

Two Color Theme

Today decided to follow up with another painting using the 2 complements blue and orange.
Orange Roses,  Oil on canvas, 16 x 12 inches

AVAILABLE AT DPWS
For me picking the colors I want to work with, and keeping the colors to a limited number, makes painting more enjoyable.  Used C.A.S. oils, ocean blue, ultramarine blue, Cad.yellow,  Cad. orange, and white and a  touch of permanent green   Love how opposite colors look so bright next to each other, and also when mixed make the most beautiful grey.  Adding this to the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.

An Impression

Oil on canvas, 16 x 12 inches
                                                                   Available at DPWs
Starting to to get in the flow of the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge again.  Today I just piled up a bunch of Chrysanthemums and started painting.  My goal was to just create the impression and feel of these flowers.
