Artwork, a multiple approach

Oil on canvas panel, 7x5 inch

I started this the other day and was having some trouble with the face.  To loosen up and get a better
feel for the subject, I took some paint; transparent red oxide and blue, and tried painting it on a gessoed paper, with a palette knife, (well some finger painting too :)
6 x 8 palette knife painting on gessoed watercolor paper

After I did this one I had a better feel for the look I wanted, but also liked this rough version.  So I photographed it, down loaded the photo and started manipulating it.  And really liked the digital version enough to add it to my FineartAmerica web site.
Digital Artwork

All of my digital artwork is based on an original painting or drawing.  An is an example of how one idea can be worked multiple ways to get an unique work of art.

Thank you for looking

Feeling Brainy

12 x 12 inches oil on canvas panel  "Mister E"
                                                                                 Available at DPWs

This is a little follow up to my last blog.  I had mentioned links for painting ideas, and one was the Daily Paint Works Challenge    Many of the challenges are open for quite a long time, which is great because you can pick and choose what you want to do.
One of the interesting things is see how different each painting posted to the challenge can be.  Fifty artist looking at the same reference subject will come up with fifty different paintings, this always amazes me.

Ideas from many directions

Day 27, and just decided to have some fun.
"Seesaw"  Acrylic on canvas panel, 5 x 7 inches
                                                                                           Available at DPWs
I did some drawing a few days ago of faces, focusing on the  asymmetry of features.  I find it interesting to look at a person's face and notice differences from one side to the other.  Most obvious is usually the eyes.  If you don't want people to feel uneasy by staring at them, try pausing a TV show and study those faces.  Raise your hand up, and block one side of the face from view, then do that to the other side.  Sometimes it will look almost like two different people.
Many years ago I made my living as a hair stylist, and learned right away never try to balance a hair cut by measuring the distance from the ears, trust me people's ears not level, and sometimes it is amazing the difference.
One of my favorite painters is Pablo  Picasso, thought  he would be a good muse for this painting.

Television and Art

TV is on but who is watching

Are you married to a spouse that is hocked on TV?  If you are you know that there are times you end watching television just because, your other half is there.  I thought I would share my sketch book with you that I keep by the remote, just for those times.
Sometimes when you can gain access to the remote, hit the pause button when an interesting and nicely shadowed face is on the screen.  Those faces are great for practicing quick portrait drawings.  And there is of course a time limit, because how long do you think your partner can handle letting you have that kind of control, before they start complaining.
So the main point here is; there is always time for art…one way or another.  Hope you enjoy my TV sketch book.........
